GNSS-RO grew out of the GPS geodesy programs of the 1980s, building on NASA's pioneering planetary radio occultation programs that began in the early 1960s. RO technology has advanced to the point of being ready to fulfill the promise laid out for it more than twenty years ago: dozens of small sensorcraft delivering tens of thousands of precise profiles daily. This presentation will offer a historical perspective on the development of RO technology, review current status, and assess its likely progress over the next decade.
