PlanetiQ GNSS RO Update

PlanetiQ is funded and implementing entirely new GNSS RO receivers and will place its first two satellites in orbit at the end of 2019 for weather, space weather and climate analysis and forecasting applications and research. Each receiver tracks the 4 GNSS constellations, GPS, GLONASS, Galileo and BeiDou, to produce approximately 2500 occultations per day once the GNSS constellations are fully populated. The GNSS RO receiver-antenna system is designed to meet COSMIC-2 performance specifications including 2000 v/v SNRs that enable detection of super-refraction and routine profiling through the boundary layer and high rate ionosphere scintillations measurements up to at least 500 km altitude. The global coverage provided by our first two satellites will be comparable to that of COSMIC-2B. Within 3 years, the constellation will consist of approximately 20 satellites producing 50,000 occultations per day, 12,500 occultations per 6 hour NWP cycle and 2000 occultations every hour, equivalent to COSMIC’s 24 hour sampling, with full global and diurnal coverage. The system is quite flexible with receivers that can be fully reprogramed on orbit. Furthermore, the number of satellites can be increased further if still denser spatiotemporal sampling is required. We are considering adding PAZ-style precipitation measurements and surface reflections and will be adding an ATOMMS capability as well.
