We have implemented a simple version of the so-called kappa approach for residual ionospheric correction in ROM SAF processing. Preliminary tests using Metop data from Oct 2016 showed that the mean size of the residuals, i.e., the difference between radio occultation retrievals with and without the correction, at 50 km, was up to 0.15%, 0.25%, and 1 K, in derived bending angle, refractivity, and dry temperature, respectively. We will briefly outline the implementation, which will become available in a future version of the Radio Occultation Processing Package (ROPP), and we will show results from a 2.5 year long period of test data spanning the beginning of 2017 to mid 2019. We plan to become operational with kappa-corrected atmospheric profiles starting with the ROM SAF offline processing by the end of 2019; later the change will also appear in the ROM SAF near real-time (NRT) processing, and finally in future ROM SAF Climate Data Records.
