Dear GRAS SAF GTS user Issued: 2010-06-01 07:20 UTC The GRAS level 1 b data was slightly degraded during this weekend starting at Saturday the 29th May . The GRAS SAF products have been flagged accordingly. Data resumed normal quality yesterday, 31th May. Please see message from EUMETSAT below. Kind regards The GRAS SAF Team Subject: GRAS: Degraded upper level bending angle data between 29 May and 31 May 2010 From: Christian Marquardt Date: 2010-05-31 21:37 UTC Dear all, according to the NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center (http://www.swpc.noaa.gov), the Earth's space environment has experienced minor to medium geomagnetic storm events over the last weekend, with maximum activity occuring on Saturday, 29th May. As during similar events in the past, the GRAS bending angle products suffered from a slight data degradation starting on Saturday, 29th May, lasting into today (31 May 2010). In particular, bending angle profiles suffered from systematic biases of up to 2-3 micro radians, with opposite signs for rising and setting occultations. These effects are mostly observable at high altitudes above 45km, and have led to increased data rejection rates in quality control schemes at NWP centres like ECMWF or the Met Office in the past. They are related to shortcomings in the Precise Orbit Determination system currently being in operations in the Metop ground segment. During today, the data quality has improved again and finally reached nominal levels. An attempt to restore consistent orbit and clock estimates in the afternoon also was successful, without introducing one of the dreaded POD resets.
