Maintenance upgrade of the GRAS SAF operational system

Description

Dear GRAS SAF data User Issued 2011-06-24 14:00 UTC We plan to make an upgrade of the GRAS SAF operational processing system on Tuesday 28 June, 2011. The upgrade will ensure that thinned bending angles and related fields are identical in the DMI and EUMETSAT BUFR files and allow future use of extrapolated L2 bending angle in the troposphere (the latter to be switched on and announced in due time at a later date). The upgrade also includes the use of ROPP 4.1 I/O interfaces which affects the BUFR and NetCDF files slightly. Data quality is expected to be unaltered. *Implications for BUFR files/GTS stream:* Descriptor 0 31 002 (replication factor) is currently always 247 for RO 'Step 1b' and 'Step 2a' data (fields 38 and N1+1 in the BUFR specification document that can be found at http://www.grassaf.org/grassaf_bufr.pdf), even when all bending angle or refractivity data are missing (set to missing values). This descriptor (for 'Step 2a' alone or in some cases both 'Step 1b' and 'Step 2a') will after the upgrade be zero when all data are missing at a particular step. *Implications for NetCDF files:* The fillvalue (missing value indicator) will change from the currently -9999.9 to -99999000. Test data files (both BUFR and/or NetCDF) processed by the new software are available upon request. Please let us know as soon as possible if you wish to receive such test files.
