Subject: GRAS degraded data expected after leap second on 30th June 2012

From: Christian Marquardt

Dear all,

many of you will be aware that a new leap second will be introduced on the coming Saturday / Sunday midnight (i.e. at 23:59:59 UTC on 30.06.2012).

In the operational GRAS processing, we will have to realign the UTC-based time used in the processing with the instruments internal time counter. This realignment will result in a controlled reset of the Precise Orbit Determination system of the operational GRAS processing. As a consequence, GRAS level 1 (and subsequently, also GRAS level 2 data produced by the ROM SAF) will undergo a period of degraded data quality. All data products will be flagged accordingly.

We expect that the period of degraded data begins a few minutes after 00:00 UTC on 01 July 2012, and will be back to nominal between 04:00 and 06:00 UTC. At that point, GRAS data quality flags will also indicate nominal bending angle data quality again. There is small risk that the period of degraded data might be extended due to unforeseen circumstances.

We apologize for the inconvenience this might cause on your side. I will keep you informed when GRAS os back to nominal data quality.

With kind regards,

 Christian.
