ECMWF Cycle 41r1 and impact on ROM SAF products

Dear ROM SAF GTS User

On the 12th of May ECMWF plan to implement an upgraded forecast system, Cycle 41r1, including significant changes to the model physics, assimilation, observation usage and ensemble configuration. This upgrade may impact the quality of the ROM SAF level 2 products. We will monitor the quality of the products and inform as necessary after the upgrade.

In particular the ECMWF announces revised interpolation of moist variables in UT/LS and assimilation of GPS-RO with two dimensional observation operators. The ECMWF background profiles are used for refractivity (level 2a) QC and as input for level 2bc 1D-Var products, so we expect that the error characteristics of these products will change with cycle 41r1.

There will be no change in format or level structure of ROM SAF products in connection to this upgrade. For more information consult the ECMWF website:
