Dear ROM SAF DATA User

Issued : 2016-10-07 19:17 UTC

On October 20, 2016, EUMETSAT will change the GRAS Radio Occultation

Level 1b processing from Geometrical Optics to Wave Optics (see: http://www.eumetsat.int/website/home/News/DAT_3212696.html).

In relation to this change, the ROM SAF will introduce additional QC checks

of the level 2a (refractivity) and 2b (1D-Var) products.

The ROM SAF operational system will be upgraded with these additional

QC checks already on October 13, 2016.

Thus, users of the refractivity products (GRM numbers 01 and 40) and the

1D-Var products (GRM numbers 02-05 and 41-44) can expect changes twice

within the next two weeks:

1) October 13, 2016:

Change of the ROM SAF QC. More profiles will be marked non-nominal.

2) October 20, 2016:

Change to Wave Optics processing at EUMETSAT. This will also

affect the refractivity and 1D-Var products.

Specifically the change allows to exploit refractivity data below 8 km which were previously declared non-nominal. In the 1D-Var products this will result in increased deviations from the ECMWF model in the troposphere.

The main impact of the new ROM SAF QC checks on the Wave Optics

data is twofold:

a) It will reduce the number of cases with erroneous oscillations

above 30 km, and generally reduce standard deviation in the stratosphere.

b) It will reduce the increased number of cases with large deviations from the

ECMWF model below 10 km, and generally reduce standard deviation in

the troposphere.

Details of the new QC will be given in validation reports currently

being prepared (and to be made available on the website:

http://www.romsaf.org/product_archive.php).

For more information on EUMETSAT Headquarters change see:

http://www.eumetsat.int/website/home/News/DAT_3212696.html

Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions related

to the data, or if you would be interested in level 2a or 2b test data.

Kind regards

The ROM SAF Team
