Kind Regards The GRAS SAF Team Forwarded message: From: Christian Marquardt Date: 2010-05-03 08:30 UTC Subject: Degraded GRAS bending angle data at high (> 35 km) altitudes Dear all, starting yesterday (02 May 2010) afternoon (~ 16:00 UTC), we are again experiencing some degradation of the quality of high altitude bending angle data from GRAS. Similar to the event at the Easter weekend, the reason is an ongoing geomagnetic storm which causes an increased atmospheric density at satellite altitudes, which is not modelled well by the operational POD. At present, we experience systematics bending angle biases in the order of 2-4 microradians at 60 km altitude, decreasing downwards. From our experience last Easter, we believe that only very few profiles are affected at altitudes below 35 km, but both ECMWF and MetOffice reported impacts on their quality control statistics down to 20 km last time. We are closely watching the quality of our products and consider to perform a POD reset in case the situation won't normalise over the next few hours; we'll keep you informed.
