Subject: Upgrade of GPS orbit processing for GRAS

Dear all,

tomorrow, the GRAS Ground Support Network (GSN) will finally switch its 
operational software for estimating GPS satellite positions and clock biases 
for the GRAS processing to the state-of-the-art NAPEOS suite. NAPEOS has 
been running in ESOC's IGS processing for some time now, and delivered 
significantly improved results; it has, in fact, turned ESOC to one of the 
leading IGS processing centres;-)

In our parallel testing of the GRAS processing with the new data products 
from GSN, we have seen improved orbit quality and a better stability of the 
operational GRAS Precise Orbit Determination (POD). These tests have been 
carried out over a few months, and no major problems were discovered 
(and only one very minor, actually). We are thus confident that the change 
will have very little (negative) impact on the GRAS processing. 

The change in the GSN product will take place during the (local) morning of
tomorrow, 20 July 2010. Because one of the many changes introduced by the 
new software is a different handling of the time offset to GPS time, our 
operational processing will most likely produce a reset of the GRAS POD. 
We will try to minimize the impacted period by reusing state vectors from 
our test ground segment. In the best case, data should only be degraded 
for a few minutes; in the worst case, we will experience a conventional POD 
reset and convergence over about four hours, during which the level 1b data 
will be flagged as degraded accordingly.

I'll inform you about how the change went during tomorrow.
