| Error in reference coordinate azimuth angle

Dear ROM SAF Data and/or ROPP User

Issued 2014-08-28 07:50 UTC

An error has recently been uncovered in the ROPP subroutine ropp_unit_conversion.f90. The error causes the reference coordinate azimuth angle to be incorrectly scaled when ROPP data files are read into programs and converted to internal ROPP units. Effectively the error causes the reference coordinate azimuth angle to be scaled by a factor of pi/180 when data are read in, processed and written to an output file. The tangent point azimuth angle is unaffected.

Consequently the so-called 'wet' files that can be obtained from the ROM SAF product archive (http://www.romsaf.org/product_archive.php) contain a reference coordinate azimuth angle (and its valid range) that is erroneously scaled twice. To produce the correct value one has to multiply with a factor (180/pi)**2. Please note that the reference coordinate azimuth angle in the so-called 'atm' and 'bfr' files is correct.

The problem will be fixed in the next ROPP release (ROPP 8.0; scheduled for end of 2014) and in a coming ROM SAF processing upgrade (for which a date has not yet been decided).

We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience that the mistake may have caused. We thank Frank Tilley, NOAA, for pointing out the problem.

With kind regards

The ROM SAF Team
